01 — Biography

Alberto Álvarez González is a founding analyst at AAG Research and leads the firm's deep value and special situations coverage. Over a nineteen-year career spanning three continents, he has developed a rigorous, fundamentals-first methodology that has consistently identified dislocation opportunities before institutional consensus. He joined AAG Research after serving as a Partner and Senior Portfolio Analyst at Orbis Investment Management in London, where he was responsible for a $1.4 billion sleeve focused on natural resource equities and distressed holding structures across Europe and Latin America.

Prior to Orbis, Alberto spent six years within BlackRock's Multi-Asset Strategies group, where he specialized in cross-asset valuation frameworks for commodity-linked instruments. His earlier career included a three-year tenure at Harbinger Capital Partners in New York, an experience that shaped his enduring interest in event-driven catalysts, restructuring dynamics, and the behavioral inefficiencies that emerge during periods of forced institutional selling.

At AAG Research, Alberto's sector focus encompasses three primary verticals: special situations and post-restructuring equity, base metals royalty and streaming vehicles, and global shipping — specifically the dry bulk and crude tanker segments where supply-side complexity and cyclicality create persistent pricing anomalies. His research framework integrates asset-level replacement cost analysis with network-effect and contract-duration variables that standard sell-side models routinely omit.

Alberto holds an MBA from INSEAD (Fontainebleau, 2007) and a B.Sc. in Economics from the London School of Economics (2004). He is a CFA Charterholder since 2008. He serves on the advisory board of the European Value Investors Roundtable and contributes periodically to the Journal of Applied Corporate Finance.
